Choosing Racks & Platforms for a School Weight Room

The rack-and-platform station is the backbone of a team weight room — it's where your athletes squat, press, and pull, and it sets how many athletes you can train per period. Most programs plan one station per 3–4 athletes in a training group, so a 40-athlete class typically needs 10–12 stations.

Combo stations that pair a rack with an integrated platform save floor space and keep lifting groups organized, while standalone platforms give you flexibility for Olympic lifts and speed work. If you're planning a full room rather than adding a station, send us your space dimensions and athlete count — we'll lay it out and quote it — flooring and design included.

Common Questions

How many rack stations does a school weight room need?

Plan around one station per 3–4 athletes in your largest training group. A 40-athlete period runs well on 10–12 stations; smaller programs can start with 4–6 and add stations over time — send us your athlete count and we'll spec it.

What's the difference between a half rack and a power rack?

A power rack (cage) fully encloses the lifter with safeties on four uprights; a half rack uses two uprights with spotter arms. Half racks take less floor space and keep coaches' sightlines open, which is why many team rooms run them — power racks suit programs that want maximum containment for newer lifters.

Do I need platforms with my racks?

If your program includes Olympic lifts or heavy pulls from the floor, yes — platforms protect the floor, define each athlete's space, and give a consistent surface. Combo rack-platform stations are the most space-efficient way to get both.

Can BFS help lay out the whole room?

Yes. Send your room dimensions, athlete count, and budget through the quote form and we'll spec stations and equipment to fit. For full build-outs — flooring, design, installation — our weight room design team handles it as a single project.
