Loading a Team Room: Plates, Dumbbells & Kettlebells
Free weight inventory is where programs most often under- or over-buy. The rule of thumb for plates is to outfit each platform for your strongest lifter, then size the rest of the room for your averages — every station needs change plates, but not every station needs 500 pounds of bumpers.
Bumper plates are the default for programs teaching Olympic lifts since they can be dropped from overhead; iron plates stretch a budget further for squat and press work. Dumbbells in 5-pound increments cover auxiliary work, and a modest kettlebell range supports conditioning circuits. We can quote a full loading package matched to your station count.
Common Questions
Bumpers or iron plates for a school weight room?
Both, usually. Bumpers for the platforms where athletes pull from the floor or take bars overhead; iron for rack work where bars get re-racked instead of dropped. Splitting the inventory that way trains everything while keeping the budget sane.
How much weight does each station need?
A common starting point is 255–345 pounds per rack station (bar, change plates, and a working set of 45s), with extra plates staged at the strongest groups' stations. Send us your station count and team strength levels and we'll spec the full inventory.
What dumbbell range should a team room carry?
Most programs run 5–75 or 5–100 pounds in 5-pound jumps, with doubles in the most-used middle range so partners aren't waiting. A-frame or shelf storage keeps the room tight between periods.
