Gym Flooring: The First Thing to Get Right

Flooring decisions are the hardest to undo, so they should come first in any weight room plan — thickness and material determine where you can drop bars, roll racks, and run sleds, and how the room handles noise and vibration above or beside classrooms.

Rubber flooring at 3/4 inch or more is the standard under free-weight areas; platform inserts take the heaviest drops. For full rooms — branded flooring, turf strips, custom inlays, and installation — BFS scopes the whole floor as part of a weight room design project. One project, one point of contact.

Common Questions

How thick should weight room flooring be?

3/4 inch rubber is the common baseline for free-weight areas, with thicker tiles or platform systems where bars drop from overhead. Machine and cardio zones can run thinner.

Can we get flooring with school colors and logos?

Yes — custom-branded performance flooring, turf strips, and inlays can be included in a BFS weight room design project. Start a design request and we'll scope it.

Does flooring really need to come before equipment?

Ideally, yes — flooring goes in before racks are anchored, and its layout (platform zones, turf strips, walkways) determines the room's traffic flow. If equipment is already in, flooring can still be phased; we've quoted both ways.
